संदेश
पांडवों के वनवास के बारह और अज्ञातवास का एक वर्ष पूर्ण होने पर जब वे प्रकट हुए तब विराटनगर में भावी कार्यक्रम के विषय में मन्त्रणा हुई। युद्ध की तैयारियाँ होने लगीं। राजा द्रुपद ने अपने पुरोहित को धृतराष्ट्र के पास भेजा। उनके युक्तियुक्त कथन का भीष्मादि द्वारा अनुमोदन किए जाने पर भी दुर्योधन ने उसे स्वीकार नहीं किया। पुरोहित के लौट जाने पर धृतराष्ट्र ने संजय को दूत बनाकर युधिष्ठिर के पास भेजा और कहलवाया कि युद्ध में भीष्मादि को मारकर राज्य भोगने से तो भीख माँगकर खा लेना अच्छा है। इसके उत्तर में युधिष्ठिर और श्रीकृष्ण का संदेश लेकर संजय ने वापस आकर कहा - "पांडव धर्मपूर्वक ही अपना राज्य चाहते हैं, यदि उनका उचित भाग उन्हें न दिया गया तो विश्व में भारी अनर्थ होगा। यात्रा में थक जाने के कारण विशेष बातें कल सभा में ही कहूँगा।" संजय के वचनों से संतप्त धृतराष्ट्र ने महात्मा विदुर को बुलाने का आदेश किया।
After completing twelve years of banishment and one year of disguise, when the Paandavas appeared, a meeting was held at Viraatanagara in order to discuss and finalize the future program. The preparations for war began. King Drupada sent his priest to deliver the message of the Paandavas to Dhritaraashtra. His befitting statement full of arguments was much appreciated by Bhiishma and others but Duryodhana did not accept it. When the priest returned, Dhritaraashtra sent Sanjaya as his messenger, who after reaching Yudhishthira said, 'It is better to beg to make a living instead of taking the throne after slaying Bhiishma and others in a war.' In reply, receiving the message of Yudhishthira and Shrii Krishna, Sanjaya on returning back said, 'The Paandavas only want their due share righteously, if their due share is not given to them, there would be a great disaster in the whole world. The journey was quite tiring and so whatever else I have to say, I will say in the assembly tomorrow.' Stricken with grief by the words of Sanjaya, Dhritarashtra sent for the high souled Vidura.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
द्वाःस्थं प्राह महाप्राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः।
विदुरं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि तमिहानय मा चिरम्॥१॥
वैशंपायन जी कहते हैं - महाबुद्धिमान् महाराज धृतराष्ट्र ने द्वारपाल को आदेश दिया है कि महात्मा विदुर को शीघ्र यहाँ बुला लाओ, क्योंकि मैं उनसे मिलना चाहता हूँ।
Vaishampaayana says, King Dhritaraashtra, endured with great wisdom, said to the door keeper, 'I desire to see Vidura. Bring him here without delay'.
